What Is Float Therapy?

Weightless rest in 1,000 pounds of pharmaceutical-grade Epsom salt. A scientifically-backed practice that quiets the nervous system, releases the body, and creates space for true restoration.

A Practice with a Pedigree

A Modern Wellness Practice Rooted in Neuroscience.

Floatation therapy — also known as Floatation-REST (Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy) — was first developed at the National Institute of Mental Health in 1954 by neuroscientist Dr. John C. Lilly. For more than seventy years, researchers have studied its effects on the body and mind.

At RELAX, we’ve reimagined how floating is delivered. No tanks. No claustrophobic pods. Instead, you enter a private, beautifully appointed suite with an oversized float pool, infrared sauna, and a personal shower — an environment built around your comfort, not the technology.

Ongoing clinical and psychological studies of REST float therapy have shown multiple payoffs — reducing stress by lowering cortisol levels, managing chronic pain, fighting addiction and depression, elevating mood, and improving sports performance.

How Floating Works

Three Forces Working in Harmony

Float therapy combines three powerful inputs — buoyancy, sensory reduction, and magnesium — to invite the body and nervous system into deep rest.

01

Weightless Buoyancy

1,000 lbs of pharmaceutical-grade Epsom salt is dissolved into the water, creating a density greater than the Dead Sea. You float effortlessly on the surface — pressure lifts from joints, the spine decompresses, and muscles release their hold.

02

Sensory Reduction

Water is held at skin temperature (about 94°F), making the boundary between body and water dissolve. With sound and light minimized, the constant work of processing external input goes quiet — and the nervous system can finally rest.

03

Magnesium Absorption

Magnesium sulfate — nature’s most relaxing mineral — supports muscle recovery, reduces inflammation, and helps regulate the body’s stress response. Float sessions are one of the most effective ways to absorb it transdermally.

What You Can Expect

The Benefits of a Float Session

Research from leading institutions — including the Laureate Institute for Brain Research, the University of Tulsa, and clinical trials in the U.S., Sweden, and Germany — has documented a wide range of benefits.

Stress & Anxiety Relief

Floating lowers cortisol, shifts the nervous system into a parasympathetic state, and has been shown in clinical trials to reduce symptoms of anxiety after just one session.

Chronic Pain Management

A 2021 JAMA Network Open study found Floatation-REST significantly reduced pain in chronic pain sufferers. Earlier research showed up to a 33% reduction in muscle tension and pain by the third session.

Better Sleep Quality

Magnesium absorption combined with deep parasympathetic activation supports the body’s natural sleep architecture. Many regulars report deeper, more restorative sleep on float nights.

Athletic Recovery

Used by professional athletes including the Patriots, Warriors, and Navy SEALs. Reduces lactic acid, accelerates muscle recovery, and improves focus — documented across eight clinical studies of athletic performance.

Mental Clarity & Focus

Without external stimulation, theta brainwave activity increases — the same state associated with meditation, deep insight, and creative breakthroughs. Many guests describe a quiet, expansive mind for days after.

Cardiovascular Calm

A 2022 study in Frontiers in Neuroscience found 90 minutes of floating lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, slowed breathing, and increased high-frequency heart rate variability.

PTSD & Trauma Support

A safe, non-pharmacological complement to traditional therapy. RELAX offers a dedicated PTSD program for veterans and first responders at reduced rates.

A Reset Button

90 minutes of floating has been compared in research to several hours of deep sleep. For many guests, it’s the most efficient form of full-body, full-mind rest available.

Creative Insight

With the default mode network quieted, the brain reorganizes itself. Studies have documented improvements in original thinking, problem-solving, and creative output following float sessions.

The Evidence Base

Float Therapy Is One of the Most-Researched Wellness Practices of the Decade.

Over the past 15 years, the body of clinical research has expanded dramatically. A 2024 systematic review analyzed 63 studies covering pain, stress, mental well-being, athletic performance, and clinical anxiety — consistently finding positive effects across categories.

A reduction in state anxiety and a substantial improvement in mood were reported post-float by all 50 individuals — showing that individuals with anxiety and depression can feel better after just one session.

Garland et al., 2024Randomized Controlled Trial — PLOS ONE

Floating significantly lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, slowed breathing, and increased high-frequency heart rate variability — a key sign of the body shifting into a relaxation mode.

Frontiers in Neuroscience, 2022Cardiovascular Effects of Floatation-REST

Across flotation sessions, decreases in muscle tension and pain were evident. Patients indicated a 25% reduction in the first session and a 33% reduction in the third session.

Your First Float

What to Expect at RELAX

From the moment you step inside, every detail is designed to help you let go. Here’s what your visit looks like.

01
15 Minutes Before

Arrive & Settle In

First-time floaters arrive 10–15 minutes early. Begin your relaxation in our calm, candlelit lobby with herbal tea while you complete any final paperwork. Avoid caffeine that day — and try not to shave the morning of your float.

02
Suite Tour

Your Private Suite

Our friendly staff will give you a personal walk-through of your private suite, including the float pool, infrared sauna, shower, and vanity. You’ll have plenty of space to undress, shower, and prepare in complete privacy — no shared changing rooms.

03
Pre-Float Shower

Rinse & Step In

A quick shower removes oils, lotions, and the day’s stress. Insert earplugs (provided), step into the float pool, and lower yourself into the warm Epsom-salt solution. You’ll float effortlessly — no swimming required.

04
60–90 Minutes

Drift & Decompress

Optional soft lighting and ambient music begin the session, then fade away. Your body lets go. Your nervous system settles. Time becomes elastic. Most first-timers report that what feels like 20 minutes was actually 60 — that’s the work happening.

05
Session Ends

Gentle Return

Music returns gently, signaling the end of your session. Rinse the salt away in your private shower, freshen up at the vanity (hair dryers, brushes, cotton swabs, contact solution — everything provided), and ease back into the world.

06
Decompression

Linger in the Lounge

Many guests like to sit in our post-float lounge afterward, sipping tea and letting the calm settle in. There’s no rush. The benefits of a single float can continue to unfold over the next 24–48 hours.

Common Questions

Your Float Questions, Answered

A few of the questions we’re asked most often. Have something else on your mind? Just call us at (215) 345-1100.

Nothing. We provide towels, contact solution and cases, waterproof earplugs, neck pillows on request, vanities stocked with hairdryers, combs, brushes, cotton swabs and cotton balls, tea, water, and a calm, relaxing environment.

You won’t need a bathing suit either — most guests float “au naturel” for the best sensory experience, in the complete privacy of their own suite.

It’s such a personal experience that we try not to say too much — you’re best off arriving without expectations.

The first float is often about simply acclimating to weightlessness without external stimuli. Once you settle in and let go, the experience can be deeply peaceful, mentally clear, or even creative — and it can be a little different each time.

What you can expect: an environment built for full relaxation, the feeling of floating weightlessly in skin-temperature water, and the opportunity to let go completely.

Yes — float therapy is widely regarded as safe and non-invasive. It’s been studied for over 70 years in clinical settings around the world.

However, floating is not recommended for people with severe claustrophobia, epilepsy, very low blood pressure, contagious illness, or open wounds. If you have a specific health condition, we always recommend checking with your doctor first.

Not at all. The water in our float pool is only 10 inches deep and contains 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt, making the solution denser than the Dead Sea. You float effortlessly on the surface — impossible to sink even if you tried.

While even a single float delivers real benefits, the research consistently shows that regular floating produces deeper, more lasting effects. Many of our guests float weekly or bi-weekly as part of their wellness routine.

If you’d like to make floating a regular practice, our monthly membership and multi-session packages offer the best value for committed guests.

This is one of the reasons we chose open float pools instead of closed tanks or pods. Our suites are spacious, with high ceilings, and the float pool itself is open from above. The lights and music are entirely under your control — you can leave them on at any level you like, and you can exit the pool at any time.

Yes — we have side-by-side private suites designed for couples. You’ll each have your own float pool, with the option to share the same private space. It’s a beautiful way to share a quiet, restorative experience together.

A few simple tips: limit or avoid caffeine the day of your float, eat a light meal an hour or two before, avoid shaving the morning of, and bring contact solution if you wear contact lenses (or arrive ready to remove them).

Beyond that — just arrive a few minutes early, take a breath, and let us handle the rest.
